Most Western Australian families decide about GATE long before they've seen a single ASET question. That's the wrong way round, and it's easily fixed: the Academic Selective Entrance Test has a particular shape, and ten minutes with real questions tells you more than any description of it. Abstract Reasoning — the fast one
Abstract Reasoning is 35 questions in 20 minutes, which is under 35 seconds each. It's non-verbal: no content to revise, just a pattern to spot. The skill that matters is seeing the rule quickly and moving on when it won't come — and that is almost entirely a matter of having seen the format before.

Notice how little there is to know and how much there is to see. If your child enjoys these, that's genuinely useful information about the test; if they freeze, the format is usually the reason — it's the part that gets easier with exposure.
Quantitative Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning asks for mathematical thinking rather than mathematical recall — number relationships, measurement and scale, data, and multi-step problems. The arithmetic is rarely the hard part.

One thing worth doing differently in WA
The ASET is a paper-based exam, sat at designated test centres across the state. Practising on a screen is fine for building the thinking, but somewhere in the last stretch it's worth doing a full section with a pencil, on paper, in one sitting — transferring answers to an answer sheet, keeping an eye on the clock, and skipping a stubborn question without losing the thread. Those are separate skills from knowing the maths, and they're the ones a screen never rehearses.
About the ASET
The test identifies academically gifted Year 6 students for placement in GATE academic programs from Year 7, including Perth Modern School and GATE Academic streams at government secondary schools across metropolitan and regional WA. It runs about 2 hours and 45 minutes in total, across Reading Comprehension, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning — the full section-by-section breakdown is in our ASET format guide.
The test is typically held in March, with applications opening the previous year and registrations closing well before the test date. Dates move each cycle, so confirm them on the WA Department of Education's Gifted and Talented page rather than on any third-party summary, including this one.
